In 2018, the new European Joint Action on Health Equity in Europe (JAHEE) is launched as part of the EU's Third Health Program 2014-2020.
JAHEE includes a total of 25 European countries: Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Denmark, Estonia, Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Lithuania, the United Kingdom, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Finland, France, Netherlands, Croatia, Czech Republic, Sweden, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Norway and Serbia. 22 of them are EU members.
NCPHA is the coordinating organization for Bulgaria with a commitment to implement activities under work packages 8 and 9 - "Improving access to health and social services for those left behind" and "Health and equality in all policies".
The aim of previous European projects on this topic was primarily to assess the size and causes and the impact of the social determinants of health or to identify which are the most vulnerable groups in society. In comparison, the European Joint Action on Health Equity has a clearer focus on the design, development and implementation of increasingly effective policies. The specific objectives of the Joint Action will contribute to improving the planning and development of policies to tackle health inequalities at European, national, regional and local level. Cooperation between countries in the process of tackling health inequalities will be strengthened.
JAHEE follows a 3-step approach for its three-year implementation period (2018-2020). In the first step, based on the best available knowledge, the five Thematic Work Packages (FP5-FP9) develop a specific policy framework for the topic area, while FP4 develops a common policy framework. At the participating country level, a template for the country's individual profile and five specific assessments for each country (for each thematic work package) are developed. In the second step, the participating countries implement a set of actions to tackle health inequalities. In the final step, recommendations based on the best results achieved will be developed and disseminated (see JAHEE Structural Diagram).
